This week, we have been learning more about the composition of numbers by investigating the numbers within 7. Composing and de-composing numbers involves the children investigating part–part–whole relations, e.g. seeing that 7 can be made of 5 and 2. The children were deepening their understanding of a whole being made up of smaller parts through games and practical experiences, such as investigating the number of ducks on a pond. They started to recognise that numbers can be made by combining parts in different ways, and were encouraged to make links by considering similarities and differences in the various ways of making 7. A key focus will be on partitioning 7 (splitting it into parts) and thinking about the missing part.

Home Learning Challenge:

This week it would be great if you could have a play with the composition of 7. Choose 7 of the same item eg 7 toy cars, 7 pieces of dried pasta, 7 cookies, 7 socks or 7 building blocks. It can be 7 of anything as long as the children can pick them up and move them around.

Play together, splitting the whole group of 7 into 2 groups talking about how many in each group and how many altogether.

Whilst you play, model the stem sentence: 7 is made of ... and ...

We would love to read any comments or feedback you could give us about how your child has done with this task on Tapestry. The children love to stand at the front of the class and talk about their learning at home smiley
