Underwater machine

Did you know that even if we live hundreds of miles from the coast, the plastic we throw away could make its way into the sea?

Plastic decomposes very slowly, breaking down into tiny pieces known as microplastics that can be incredibly damaging to sea life.

There are approximately 51 trillion microscopic pieces of plastic, weighing 269,000 tons - that is the same as 1345 adult whales!

Could you design a machine that cleans all the plastic in the sea? Think about the design being water-compatible – it has to have a method of floating around in the water, how it can stay away from animals, how it will collect the plastic, how the plastic will be emptied and how can it be seen in the dark.
