Aspire, Learn, Succeed
This week we have been learning about the following vowel digraphs: oo oo or ar. The children have learned that there are 2 different ways to say the oo digraph (a short /u/ sound as in book, hook, cook or a longer /oo/ sound as in cool, zoom, food). Sometimes we just have to try each one when decoding a word with oo to see which digraph sounds correct and makes sense in the word.
Each of the new digraphs/trigraphs in Phase 3 has a catchphrase and picture to help the children recall the matching phoneme:
To embed this learning further, it would be helpful to your child if you could practise reading and writing the following words and captions at home:
look cook book wood foot hook | too boot food moon zoom cool | car dark card park card march | for torn fork born sort horn |
The moon is up high. Look at the toad on the wood. I can see the car in the dark. The goat was born at night. This book is cool! |
