The comparison of quantities is something that children begin to do as babies. When comparing, children notice attributes and begin to understand the differences and similarities between them. Our activities this week focused on further developing this innate skill as the children were encouraged to focus exclusively on ordinality: considering where numbers to 8 are in relation to each other.

Language was a key focus and there was lots of modelling of the language: ‘more than’, ‘less than’ and ‘equal to’ to describe the relationships between numbers. This week, ‘less than’ was used instead of ‘fewer than’ because the focus was on each number’s position in the counting sequence.

The children played games with the Numberblocks 1-8. We practised ordering them, checking that they created the 'staircase pattern' showing the next number was always one more than the previous number.

The children also played a game of 'hide and seek' with the Numberblocks, exploring which numbers could hide behind each other then explained their reasoning to prove their ideas.
