Year 3

Welcome to Year 3!

 

Our Year 3 teacher is Miss Jackson. We are supported by Miss Tran.

 

We are looking forward to completing lots of exciting learning this year. If you require any support or have any questions please do not hesitate to come and find us.

 

Our class author is Adrian Edmondson, we are Edmondson class. We are currently basing our English lessons around his books. We are really enjoying reading them together as a class.

Key notices:

PE: Monday and Thursday.

  • The children need to bring a full PE kit and water bottle on these days. Earrings must be removed or (if freshly pierced) the children need to bring in tape to cover them up. Adults in school will not remove earrings or provide tape. 

 

Homework:

  • Every Friday the children will take home a list of spellings. They will be quizzed on these the following Friday. Please work on these at home so that the children are fully prepared for the quiz. 
  • Reading daily for at least 20minutes. Please sign reading logs. 
  • TT Rockstars - please access this as often as possible at home. 
  • Purple Mash - all children can access this learning tool from home.

Earth Day 🌎- Year 3 used Digimaps to introduce their new topic by locating the four countries and capital cities of the United Kingdom

Comic Relief 2025!

English- Debating!
We put our debate skills to the test today as we argued for and against a variety of different topics...!

Planting!

We had lots of fun this afternoon planting plants to store in different conditions. We can wait to see if our predictions (which condition will grow best) were accurate!

DT- Designing and making a mountain!

We completed step one today of our mountain making task. More photos to follow soon...

Geography- Atlas work!

In our Geography lesson today, we used atlases to find the world's major mountain ranges. We then identified which continent they are located on.

Science- Parts of a plant!

We used iPads to research the different functions of a flowering plant. 

Science Week- Amazing Adaptations!

We used part of our PE lesson to link into Science Week. We performed different yoga poses related to different animals. We explored how they adapt to fit into their habitat and surroundings.

Happy World Book Day!

World Book Day- Book in a Box!

As part of World Book Day, we used our class book Junkyard Jack and the Horse that Talked to created our own 'Book in a box'. We each had a specific role and really enjoyed bringing the book to life!

Happy Pancake Day!

PSHE

In PSHE, we explored Strong Emotions looking closely at anger. We used abstract art to depict how anger makes us feel.

Our first attempt at recorders today with Mr Rickson! A great afternoon making music!

Drama!

We investigated all the different ways we can say 'big' and 'small' using drama and our bodies to act these out!

Spring 1

Two fantastic new "teachers" came to help out in Year 3 today as part of 'Takeover Day'. A fun day for everyone!

Safer Internet Day 2025!

Today we used the laptops to explore how we can stay safe online and prevent scams! We thought about apps that we use at home and thought about how we can keep safe when using them!

Car Ramp Friction Test!

We investigated friction in our science lesson today. We explored how friction changes the length in which a car travels.

School Trip Leeds City Museum!

Our first set of images from our school trip today exploring and finding out all things Ancient Egypt! We also had a great time exploring all of the other things the museum had to offer!

Happy Chinese New Year!

We had a great afternoon making lanterns to celebrate the beginning of the Chinese New Year!

Science- Forces

We conducted an experiment to find out which surface a protractor travels best on. We linked this to our current maths learning of 'Measure' and used a meter stick to see how far they travelled!

Wonderful Writing!

We had an amazing lesson writing up our extended pieces of writing onto special paper. More photos to follow soon!

PSHE- Teamwork

We had a great PSHE lesson learning all about teamwork and communication! We completed a blindfolded relay where we guided our partners. Upon reflection, we spoke about how communication is essential to teamwork and also relationships, if someone feels safe/ confident with that person it made them more successful. 

Music
We had a fantastic time performing our Jazz body percussion! 

Maths- Scaling

We had a great time creating our own word problems to explore scaling in Maths.

Investigating Remainders!

In Maths, we have been learning all about remainders. We used lolly sticks to aid in our maths investigation!

In English we used drama to act out verbs from our story (The Egyptian Cinderella) this was a fantastic way to enhance our understanding and engagement with the text. We also imagined if we could text the Pharaoh at the party what we would say. It was great to use our imagination!

PE- Dance

Year 3 enjoyed a dance lesson today inspired by Ancient Egypt. We explored graceful movements based on Egyptian art and hieroglyphics, learning about the role of dance in rituals and celebrations.

Music

Starting off the year with some fantastic music performances learning how to keep to the beat using our bodies as instruments. Our focus was Hip Hop!

We had a great time using laptops for the first time today!

We had a super time feeling festive making our Christmas calendars! 

Drama

In Drama, we had a great time making different body shapes to depict our story 'How to wash a woolly mammoth'.

Science- Soil Analysis!

We had a fantastic, interactive science lesson testing what happens to soil when you pour 60ml of water into each. We then recorded our results after!

English- Stone Age Poetry Writing

We did amazing writing our own diamante poem all about the Stone Age!

We used spreadsheets to budget in Computing today. We had £300 to plan a party and had to combine our Maths skills and our knowledge on spreadsheets to keep well within budget! 

PE

More action shots today in PE, a very intense game of Bench Ball! Everyone tried so hard with their teamwork and defence skills.

Stone Age Day!

We had a fantastic day immersing ourselves in all things Stone Age! We even tried our hands at Cave Paintings!

For our English lessons we have been learning the features of an instructional text and how to write one. Today, we tested if we could follow a set of instructions to make an Origami butterfly!

English- Prepositions!

We had a great time exploring what prepositions were in English, we were fantastic at using our imagination to act them out!

Science- Testing how permeable soil is

We completed a fair test today whereupon we tested three different soils and timed how quick water could pass through each.

In English, we have been reading 'How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth'. In our English lesson today, we researched all the reasons why it would be hard to wash a woolly mammoth. Did you know their tusks are 15 foot long?!

A busy start to the week... as well as making our healthy tarts, we have been using some excellent inference skills in Guided Reading followed by some competitive games during our Multi Skills PE lesson! Our action shots are amazing!

DT- Cooking a healthy tart!

Half of the class today enjoyed going out to cook their healthy, seasonal tart. We learnt the bridge claw technique and explored which flavours complimented which. The second half of the class cannot wait to do theirs next week!

Science

We made our very own fossils using clay today, we made a bone imprint and then removed it to see what shape it left! We are going to let them dry out over the weekend and come back to them to investigate further next week!

Spelling

We took our learning outdoors for our spelling lesson today! We enjoyed using chalk to practise this weeks spellings!

Children in Need 2024!

Science- Rock Investigation

We went on a hunt for different kinds of rocks in the school grounds. Once inside, we described their physical properties. We had a fantastic time exploring and investigating!

Autumn 1

A lovely way to finish the half term... making suncatchers in the style of cobwebs! We had a fantastic time and are ready for a well deserved break!

RE

We split into two teams and made two chants/ poems each to describe the summer and winter solstice!

Maths- Column Addition and Subtraction

We tried our first attempt at Column Addition and Subtraction today in Maths! We focused on accurate presentation and making sure we had one digit per box! 

Guided Reading

In Guided Reading, we have been improving our fluency and prosody skills using our class book Tilly and the Time Machine! We have enjoyed reading aloud to our partner and even taking risk and reading aloud in front of the rest of the class.

RE

In our RE lesson today we were learning about ancient stories relating to the sun and how these link to religious events and festivals. We looked at sun dials and after making our own discussed how light and dark make us feel. We then researched all about ancient Gods.

PE

Geography- Exploring our Locality

Earlier on in the week, Year 3 went on their local walk all around Cross Gates! We enjoyed planning our route and then using our checklists to tick off all the physical features and key landmarks which we saw.

Science- Making Muscles!

In our science lessons we have been learning all about the human body, in particular, muscles! We learnt that the human body has over 600 muscles. We made our own model example to show how our arms bend and muscles stretch and move. 

Northern Ballet Workshop

We really enjoyed our workshop with Northern Ballet yesterday! We enjoyed using our imagination and expression.

Science

We made our own skeletons today before labelling them with the correct scientific terms!

Maths- Adding 10s and 1s to a 3 digit number

Geography- Mapping

We made maps of our local area in Geography- we even added a key for the symbols we created!

RE

We continued our learning about Diwali and made our own Diva Lamps! We cannot wait to paint them when they are dry next week!

Drama

We had a fantastic time in this weeks drama lesson, we created our own human time machine and then created still images from the book Tilly and the Time Machine!

Raffle Ticket inspired Maths

We used raffle tickets to consolidate our understanding of partitioning numbers into hundreds, tens and ones!

RE

In our RE lesson, we explored how light is important to Sikhs during Bandi Chhor Divas. We listened to the story of Guru Hargobind and made tassles for the cloak after we listened carefully.

RE- Traditional Dancing!

We learnt all about Diwali today in RE, we ended the lesson by performing some traditional dances.

PE- Hockey

We had a great time playing Hockey and learning all the key skills in PE today. We showed our competitive side and enjoyed cheering each other on!

Our first superstar Gold Book this year! An amazing drawing of an eye! Well done smiley

Art

We have started the year with lots of Art in preparation for drawing our own self portraits! We paid close attention and used the right pencils to ensure detailed shading and accuracy.
