This half-term we have welcomed lots of parents and grandparents into nursery to share different books with the children. We really value the importance of early reading, and it has been wonderful to see so many adults attending,
During half-term it was Diwali the Hindu and Sikh festival of light. It is a wonderful festival to celebrate with young children as there are so many sensory and creative activities to involve children in. The children were invited to make clay Divas, Rangoli patterns and Mendhi art. The children loved dressing in Asian clothes and dancing using our finger lights. We also looked at Diwali cards, dance sticks, jewellery and watched some Diwali celebrations. We hope everyone who celebrated Diwali had a wonderful time.
We celebrated Bonfire night with yummy firework chocolate snacks, colour explorations both inside and out and making our own firework dances.
This half-term we started our 'number studies,' looking at each number in turn and exploring different representations.
We use number rhymes to support the children's understanding of numbers. This week the children studied 'Five Little Snowmen.' We dressed as snowmen, explored numbers to five using the five frame and enjoyed singing the rhyme. In our Maths area, the children continue to explore the rhyme and develop their understanding of numbers to 5!
In nursery, we have a display of children's drawings. This is updated every half-term and records their development in drawing and mark making. The children have drawn some wonderful self portraits for our 'Peg of Pride' display.
Mushrooms
As part of our Wanderlust nature studies, we have been learning all about mushrooms and talking about funghi. We looked at lots of different mushrooms from the supermarket but then looked at and explored some from the woods. We talked about the importance of not picking these.
We decided to make our own mould garden and added bread, pineapple, cheese and tomato to a mason jar. We are going to watch closely to see the changes in the substances.
Later, we developed our fine motor skills by chopping lots of mushrooms. If you could take your child on a walk into the woods and look for some mushrooms outside. You might find some growing on the base of trees, see if you can find some unusual coloured ones.
Christmas is such a magical time in school, and we celebrated with lots of sparkle and fun! The children enjoyed a Christmas party, Christmas jumper day, Christmas dinner and our fabulous Christmas stay and play. So many parents/grandparents came to watch the children sing and enjoy lots of Christmas-themed activities.
